Although it has been argued that early Christians were "unitarian," the oldest Unitarian Church in the world, established in 1568, is in Transylvania, now part of Romania. These Unitarians noted that the Doctrine of the Trinity, which says that Jesus is God, is not in the Bible. They emphasized the humanity of Jesus and the Unity of God.
The Universalist Church was founded in 1770, in Good Luck, New Jersey. Universalists believed in "universal salvation," the idea that a loving God would never design a universe in which any people were punished eternally in Hell. Later Universalists emphasized the universal hopes and truths shared by the worlds great religions.
The Unitarians and the Universalists merged in 1961. We have no statement of belief which members or clergy must accept. We believe the beauty of life is so great that it defies attempts to squeeze it into narrow theological categories.
We reverence the natural world, the interdependent web of existence of which we are a part. We believe that human beings are responsible for the future; history is in our hands, not those of an angry God or inexorable fate. We believe lifes blessings are made manifest to us not just in the "miraculous," but in the simple pleasures of every day. We believe in living life with as much passion, integrity and love as we can.
