Marriage Ceremonies

Michigan law permits marriage ceremonies to be conducted by persons who have been granted the authority to do so by a church or religious group.  In addition to KUUF’s Rev. Sydney Morris, three lay members of the Fellowship have been so authorized as Officiants:  Jack Jobst, Barry Elizabeth Fink, and Bill Fink.

A Unitarian Universalist marriage ceremony may be conducted in any practical location, indoors or out.  There is no dogma or creed to be met.  The couple works with the Minister or the Officiant to develop a set of vows reflecting their values and commitment to one another.

Although they confer no legal status under Michigan law, ceremonies marking a renewal of marriage vows and the commitment of same-sex couples to one another can also be performed.

It is the couple’s responsibility to obtain a valid marriage license through the County Clerk’s office.  Please review information and instructions found on the State of Michigan’s website (www.michigan.gov).

We ask that an honorarium to be paid to the Minister or Officiant if neither partner in the couple is a member of our Fellowship.  Reimbursement for mileage or other expenses is also expected.
